Behind the Scenes at Katie & Erik’s Bright Citrus Wedding

This weekend as the weather shifted into full fledged summer heat, Katie & Erik celebrated their wedding with bold, bright, beautiful, summery colors. I was so excited to work with huge, gorgeous coral charm peonies, roses in oranges, pinks, and peach, along with fragrant feverfew, and lots of fresh foraged greenery. The heat presented us with quite a challenge- it’s hard to keep flowers happy when it’s 90 degrees in the shade. We kept everything as cool as possible until the last moment and then watched as the heat opened up every last peony into their full glory just in time for the wedding!

Katie’s bouquet was a stunner. Garden roses, orange ranunculus, green hypericum berries, white peonies, and solomon seal were nestled in around showstopping coral charm peonies. Her bridesmaid’s carried soft pink and white bouquets with roses, peonies, and delicate sweet peas.

Behind the Scenes at Chris & Lauren’s Stunning Springtime Reception

Last weekend I got to work on one of the most beautiful wedding receptions in recent memory. Lauren and Chris were married at the UVA Chapel and held their reception in a gorgeous private barn in Keswick. Their flowers were soft pinks and white with lots of fresh, springy elements. We used buckets of lush local peonies from Pharsalia and Blue Heron Farm, along with foraged viburnum and dogwood from our garden. Their centerpieces were a combination of low mercury glass compotes filled with lush garden roses, peonies, viburnum, dusty miller, sweet peas, and dogwood, alternating with striking, tall arrangements on glass pedestals with peonies, stock, larkspur, viburnum, and roses.

Three long farm tables were decorated with garlands of eucalyptus, laurel, and bay, with garden roses and small arrangements of peonies, garden roses, and dogwood tucked in.

Every last detail was simple, elegant, and beautiful. The tables were set with gorgeous embroidered napkins, each tied in silk ribbon with a single sprig of rosemary from our garden. Thanks to photographer David Schwartz for these lovely shots of the table details.

The bouquets featured local peonies and dusty miller, along with soft garden roses, ranunculus, freesia, sweet peas, and eucalyptus. I was so busy with set up that I didn’t have a chance to photograph them, so many thanks to the amazing David Schwartz for capturing them so beautifully.

After a brief period of hibernation, we’re back in action. This past weekend kicked off our 2016 wedding lineup, and what a start to the season!

Nicole and Bobby wanted a Grammy Awards themed wedding and that is what they got! MS Events rolled out hundreds of feet of red carpet (including down the aisle!), draped King Family in black, with black tablecloths and gold everywhere for maximum glam.

Close up of mantle arrangment

The couple were married in front of the huge stone fireplace, with a roaring fire behind them. I had the pleasure of working on the arrangement that stretched from one end of the mantle to the other. I’ll admit I’ve gotten soft over the winter and this one was a real wake up for the designing muscles! This kind of arrangement is much more easily done on site, especially when it’s made up of delicate orchids and amaryllis. So I started with nothing more than a block of foam and some candles, and after a few hours of climbing up and down the ladder it all came together. The effect of the orchids spilling over the mantle was really stunning, if I do say so myself.

The reception flowers were a gorgeous mix of all white blooms featuring orchids, amaryllis, roses, ranunculus, hydrangeas, and lisianthus. Our designers Marlin and Johanna outdid themselves creating these lush and glamorous centerpieces in the studio and then perfecting them in place by adding delicate orchids. Low centerpieces in gold compotes alternated with high arrangements perched on gold candelabras, and both were were set off beautifully by all the black and gold.

The only flowers that were not white were bright red to match the red carpet! The bridesmaids each held bouquets of red roses, and the bride had a delicate bouquet of white roses, orchids, sweet peas, and gardenia.

Big thanks to all the folks we worked with on this one: Amore Events by Cody, MS Events, Harvest Moon Catering, and SweetHaus. Bring it on 2016 wedding season!
